HUMAN PURPOSE LOST AND FOUND

The new cosmology resonates with Christian faith –

God cannot be reduced to the creation event –

something must have come before Creation –

God is not reducible to the universe –

even though people pray to the universe

or ask the universe to do things for them

“the universe” is a code name for “God”

but people are afraid to admit God into their life

because it is not cool these days to be religious –

God is not the universe nor separate from it

but God’s Presence is in and flows thru ongoing creation

modern atheism did not arise with science

but atheism got a kickstart with Copernicus’ heliocentrism –

humans kicked out of the center of the universe

to the periphery of a vast impersonal cosmos

humans irrelevant to the cosmic story –

humans no longer the perfection of the universe

but an accidental side show

gave birth to existentialism – we have no god-ordained purpose –

we create our own purpose by what we do

Gandhi retrieved and the West lost a religious view of reality –

a view of the importance of being and truth

the West reduced the human purpose to practical efficiency –

concerned with means not ends –

no longer aware of the intrinsic God-given value

of being human – we only focus on what humans

can do for other humans – particularly the rich

our only purpose: producing and consuming things

only religion kept a notion of our intrinsic value –

the Church’s mission to discover honest-to-goodness truth

through open dialogue between humans

requires reverence and respect for lawful diversity

“The Church’s purpose is to keep unity in essentials

freedom in non-essentials, and charity in all things”

– Pope John XXIII

but the Church cannot brag about any of this –

it is the work of the Holy Spirit

to call forth many religious – hermits/monks/nuns

who have consecrated their lives to prayer –

praising God and interceding for God’s People –

this has gone on since the Desert Mothers/Fathers

and is the living source of the spiritual life of the Church.

SPIRIT UNDERLIES AND CONNECTS ALL

When the Spirit of God – always feminine in the Bible

breathed life into human beings in Genesis

She breathed life into all human beings

not just Jews or Christians – these two world religions

have no exclusive claim to the Holy Spirit

so it is not surprising a Buddhist like Thich Nhat Hanh

claims the Holy Spirit as the Source of his life and all life

the Holy Spirit connects everything –

Rupert Sheldrake postulated that repetitive behaviour

creates “morphogenetic fields” – gene-transforming spiritual fields –

that influence the behaviour of all members of a species –

this explains how generation after generation

of birds and butterflies know what pathways to take

when they fly south guided by the Spirit

therefore, contrary to the great atheist Richard Dawkins

we are more than our selfish genes –

our Spirit-fueled behaviours/relationships/souls guide us

the desire for God is behind all our motivations and all our sins –

pride wants what is lofty, but nothing is loftier than God

so pride wants to be God – to replace God with ego

ambition seeks honor and glory

but God alone is worthy of honor and glory

cruelty wants to arouse fear

but the only thing we ought to fear is God –

the Lord Almighty/Creator of Heaven and Earth –

but Jesus said “Do not fear God for God loves you

and even numbers all the hairs on your head” (Luke 12:7)

sloth is a desire for a quiet life

but God alone gives true rest

the problem with the Bible is it’s true teachings

always become subverted by counter-teachings –

the radical assertions of Jesus are subverted

by putting rhetorically violent words in his mouth –

the sheep go to eternal bliss, the goats to eternal torture (Matthew 25) –

on the other hand, Jesus was always authentically himself

and expressed what he truly felt: even anger and grief

he lived what he preached –

walked his talk no matter the cost –

expressing all aspects of love: self-revelation/

understanding/empowering/celebrating/

uniting all things.

TWO AGES

Michel Foucault believed the sciences of man

furthered scientism

the belief science has all the answers

which led to the “Age of Man”

in which humans are studied as

objects of scientific investigation –

B. F. Skinner’s behaviorism

treats humans as “Its”

with no subjectivity.

Science can give us concrete information

about the flow of evolution and our place in it

but not a framework for ultimate meaning –

the purview of theology and religion.

There is a different way of looking at salvation –

God saves us from ourselves

by giving us meaning.

With meaning, little else is needed

without meaning we are caught up in endless

addictive consumerism, rivalry, competition

endlessly rolling the stone up the mountain

only to watch it roll down again

as others out-compete us.

But there is positive meaning and negative meaning.

Martin Luther’s meaning in the 16th century

created the perfect storm for anxiety:

focus on sin, the wrath of God, heaven and hell

coupled with new printing press technology

to spread the Message, rats to spread the Bubonic Plague

and the dissolution of ecclesial order

an “Age of Anxiety” blossomed

whose rotting fruit persists to this day.

Believing, as Luther did,

that we are a solid, separate self

traps us in self-centeredness

but as we work through the chakras in order

we are liberated from successive prisons:

chakras 1,2,3: egocentric food, sex, power

chakras 4,5: ethnocentric love and communication

chakras 6,7: world-centric mindfulness and spirituality.

The ‘porous’ non-separated self gives and receives:

as living beings, we are part of the close-knit family

of living organisms that evolved one from another

over billions of years, products of immensely creative

energy-exchanges of matter and spirit that makes us one with

stars, galaxies, and everything.

Pharisaism symbolizes the self-centered self –

identification with your own self-righteousness

no shadow; no need of conversion

which ironically blocks your path to God

and your compassion for others –

being in touch with shadow means

you know you need, and others need

God’s grace.

To break addiction to yourself

(the only way to liminal space/transformation)

you must change your usual patterns:

fasting not eating, silence not talking,

anonymity not fame, displacement not status,

poverty not money.

Realizing that all desires are good

and the problem is only selfish misuse of desire

many mystics gave up asceticism:

punishing their bodies, suppressing their desires.

Meister Eckhart for one

replaced asceticism with non-attachment.

Desires are good, but on the other hand

pain burns through illusions

of false pleasures

and shows us what is truly beautiful.

But what you see, the beauty of pain or pleasure

depends on how you choose to see:

positive or negative, blessing or curse.

Why is the Holy Spirit within everyone

but not everyone realizes it?

Because God does not force anything on anyone

that they didn’t desire and choose –

human freedom is respected –

and the freedom of the Holy Spirit

to overcome anxiety

and the limits of science.

WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

Few of us can run off

to the wilderness or hermitage

so the older religions

to break us out of

our normal, comfortable, sleepwalking trance

help us get into liminal space

through pilgrimages, fasting, silent retreats

Lent or Ramadan.

You are baptized with the Holy Spirit

not by believing in the Holy Spirit

as a doctrine, but by drawing upon

the Divine Indwelling already within you.

According to Thomas Merton

the Holy Spirit is the Soul of the Church

so when the Holy Spirit prays within you

whether in public or private

it is the Soul of the Church

praying within you.

Bad things happen to good people

but the Holy Spirit is always present

prompting you from within

to take care of your self

and comforting you from within

when your health, work, or marriage  fails.

Quantum theology befriends and redeems

the pain, the dark, the chaos

by helping people see the interdependence of

darkness and light

pain and pleasure

sickness and health

death and rebirth.

The Holy Spirit shows us

there is a virtue to be practiced for every sin:

pride/humility, anger/patience

avarice/compassion, lust/chastity

gluttony/sobriety

all the Enneagram

vices and virtues.

If you are engaging with those

who have not suffered

“rings of fire”

your attempts to explain

the reasonableness of faith

or prove God’s existence

will fail.

Systematic atheism insists

humans must be free

of any kind of God

as their author and goal

in order to be responsible

for their own life.

Since YOU are your own author, goal and end

you cannot foist off onto God

responsibility for your own life.

Atheism relies upon science

but science believes only

what can be physically located is real:

cells, brains, stars.

So science scrubs the universe clean of

values, meaning, consciousness, ethics and depth

since these things cannot be located in the cosmos

they are unreal fantasies/illusions.

What Alfred North Whitehead called

“the fallacy of simple location”

leaves us with a culture of superficiality.

We are like seed

that falls upon gravel

and withers because it has no roots.

Merton studied the “archaic wisdom”

of Mayans, Zapotecs, Toltecs

to learn how to counter the efficiency, ambition

and triviality of technocratic society.

Science saps us of passion

but Eros is the Holy Spirit in action – and passion

deserves a home among spiritual people

– passion for pleasure and sharing it

– compassion: awareness of suffering

– passion for restorative justice

– all these are works of the Holy Spirit.
