THE EVOLUTION OF BELIEF

In 139 C.E. (Common Era), Ptolemy, a Greek astronomer,

developed a system of circles within circles

which became the primary astronomical model

for 1500 years!

for 15 centuries everyone believed

this was how the universe operated

but the accretion of more and more untested beliefs

along with increasingly sophisticated science/history/psychology

caused some Christians, desperately trying to keep up

to assert increasingly unbelievable things

like the existence of hell – a place of eternal torture –

what could anyone do in their brief lifespan to warrant that? –

this belief was the projection of our worst fear onto God

made God into an Absolute Demon/Monster

and created scepticism/atheism

hell exists, but it is a God-forsaking mental state not a place

7 centuries before Teilhard de Chardin

St. Angela of Foligno saw the whole evolving creation as

a divine milieu – a universe pregnant with God – a heaven

in Fall/Redemption traditional spirituality

the quest is for perfection

and the goal is to keep the soul clean

but in Quantum Theology/Spirituality no perfection exists –

imperfection is integral to all nature –

and holiness is cosmic hospitality – welcoming all things –

and the goal is to keep the soul green/

evergreen/ever-growing

7 centuries before, and surprisingly like, Quantum Theology

Meister Eckhart’s writings on the soul

answered the fundamental philosophical/theological questions:

“who are we?/why do we exist?”

which supply the basic purpose/direction of our lives

no one but Meister Eckhart

according to Matthew Fox

so thoroughly integrated

biblical theology/spirituality/

prophecy/mysticism/

faith/reason/

art/life.

THE RISE AND FALL OF THE NEW ATHEISM

Justin Brierley, host of the “Unbelievable?” podcast, which hosts Christians and atheists in dialogue, likes to thank atheists for reviving Christian thinking.

Brierley’s new book The Surprising Rebirth of Belief in God: Why the New Atheism Grew Old and Secular Thinkers Are Considering Christianity Again is part of a new wave of tomes such as two by Alister McGrath: The Dawkins Delusion: Atheist Fundamentalism and the Denial of the Divine and Coming to Faith Through Dawkins: Twelve Essays on the Pathway from New Atheism to Christianity in which a dozen secular thinkers found their way to belief in God through reading criticism of Richard Dawkins. Even Deepak Chopra weighs in with a chapter on “Dawkins and his Delusions” in his book The Future of God.

The “four horsemen of the atheist apocalypse,” Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, Sam Harris, and Daniel Dennett were very popular from about 2000 to 2010 but have fallen out of vogue since then.

The new atheism arose because of a perfect storm of events: American fundamentalist criticism of evolution, resulting in a ban on teaching the scientific theory in some schools; ongoing aggression by religious evangelists who considered atheists either foolish or evil; the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center by fundamentalist Muslims; and sex scandals perpetrated by priests and covered up by bishops.

The storm resulted in a counter storm of books by atheist scientists such as Harris and Dawkins, notably Dawkins’ The God Delusion, and writers such as Dennett and Hitchens, notably Hitchens’ God is not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything.

However, the atheist counter storm resulted in a counter storm from Protestant philosophers such as William Lane Craig, Alvin Plantinga, Tim Keller, and John Lennox.

The new atheism came to be seen as deeply flawed for two main reasons. First, they cherry-picked their approach to religion, straw-manning their opponents by just focusing on the worst aspects of religion. Their simplistic approach to religious faith failed to take into account all the good religions have done for centuries: providing billions of people with deep meaning in their lives, pastoral care during hard times, and building charities, hospitals, schools, and universities around the world.

Secondly, they failed to apply their critical standards to themselves. They only got as far as Kierkegaard’s ethical stage, and have not examined the shadow side of atheism, for example atheist political regimes in Soviet Russia and Communist China that slaughtered millions of people. They did not own their own sin, which Kierkegaard noted, prompts the next stage after ethics, the religious stage.

Part of their problem was that, as Catholic Bishop Robert Barron pointed out, they were rhetoricians, great at arguing their point but naïve about the depths of theological thinking. Also, they were in love with “scientism,” the belief that science has all the answers, an unprovable hypothesis which is therefore rejected by true scientists.

True scientists recognize the limits of science. Science can only answer “how questions,” for example, how we got here through evolution. It is incapable of answering “why questions,” for example, “what is the purpose of my life?” That is a meaning and value question which is in the realm of religion not science.

As Bishop Barron also noted, when atheists try to formulate their values, they usually latch on to “the brotherhood of man” or other values that come from Christianity. So, they unconsciously criticize Christianity with Christian values. This is fair, since any religion is only as perfect or imperfect as the people who compose it. If they do not live up to their professed values, they deserve to be criticized.

In short, the two big mistakes of the new atheists were to unfairly overdo their criticism of religion, and to not look at the dark side of atheism.

THE GREAT REVERSAL

There was a development from first generation Christians who

focused on the special relationship of Jesus to God

to second generation Christians who

to counter growing Gnosticism

focused on Jesus as the Cosmic Christ

as the only way to redemption

the kingdom/queendom/kindom of God

is available to us here and now

because Jesus is the door

thru which we enter the kingdom/salvation/life everlasting

and we do not go to the kingdom – the kingdom comes to us –

since Jesus not only is the door – he stands at the door/knocks/and asks

will we let “Thy kingdom come” to us?

this is the Great Reversal: Jesus showed us

we cannot deduce anything about Jesus

from speculation about God – everything about God

must come from what we know about Jesus

Jesus unconditionally accepts sinners –

he does not condemn them

but gives them a strong challenge:

he will not tolerate

objectively destructive behaviour that ruins people

therefore repentance – turning from sin –

is the key to Christ’s door

of a new beginning –

Jesus unconditionally accepts sinners

but does not unconditionally accept their sin

“Besides the ‘Communion of Saints’

we should also affirm the ‘Communion of Sinners’

since all of us firmly belong to both groups”

– Richard Rohr

“God says ‘Abide in me, abide in my love,

make your home in the love

of the homemaking God

and you will bear much fruit’”

– Canadian folk music legend

Bruce Cockburn

QUESTIONING PATRIARCHY

We are made from and for love

the intensity of divine love never varies

God loved us equally: before God made us/

as God loves us now/as God will love us in the life to come

healthy parents do not want their children

just to think rightly about Mommy and Daddy

they want a personal relationship with them

and for their children to thrive

similarly, God did not create us

just to think rightly about God (doctrine)

God created us to have a personal relationship with us

and wants us to be fully alive –

“The glory of God is man and woman fully alive”

– St Irenaeus

“I have come so they might have life

and have it abundantly” – Jesus

in How to Read the Bible and Still Be a Christian

John Dominic Crossan wrote “Accept the nonviolent Jesus

as the true image of the nonviolent God

and reject the subversion of Jesus and God

into violence”

similarly, gender subversion needs to be rejected

where “woman” in both religion and civilization

was associated with “matter” and “nature”

and “man” with “spirit” and “culture”-

this gender division was an ordering/organizing principle

which created hierarchical structures and relationships

but God’s Work like God’s Wisdom

turns the world upside down

our challenge is to join God’s Work

by challenging the status quo/

being as revolutionary/prophetic as Jesus

faced with the silence of God/

the silence of his own soul/

and the silence of the souls entrusted to him (novices)

Thomas Merton realized eighty years ago

the most practical thing would be to stop asking questions

but today he would encourage us to ask questions

about sexuality/gender/patriarchy.

EMPIRES OF IDEAS

In Carol Gilligan’s model of moral development

the order is: selfishness/care/universal care/integrated care –

the integration of masculine and feminine energies in the soul

dualism – separating things – causes us to project

our personal and social shadows onto goats –

scapegoats –

instead of integrating our shadow –

if all things are one, which they are –

you have to own your own shadow – you cannot escape it

the fact that nondualism is central to 3 major world religions –

Hinduism/Buddhism/Christianity –

and that Christianity taught it for 16 centuries –

“I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you”

(John 14:20) – proves that nondualism

is absolutely important

dualisms like spirit vs body/human vs animal/sacred vs secular

falsify the holism of life/nature/God – God works thru

both-and polarities

not either-or dualisms –

God is in the body/nature/secular

just as much as in the spirit/the human/the sacred

but atheists separate God and man – they cut God

out of the picture completely – as Wayne Dyer liked to say

EGO means Edging God Out –

the famous atheist Bertrand Russell

was even more cynical than John Calvin who professed

humanity’s “total depravity” –

Russell believed the soul’s foundation had to be built

on ironically soul-killing and unyielding despair

since every human accomplishment will be wiped out

because the universe will eventually disappear

but take courage  – for empires of ideas like dualism

just like empires of power and wealth

come and go –

“In the world you will have trouble, but take courage

I have conquered the world – these things I have spoken to you

so that in me you may have peace” – Jesus in John 16:33.

PERSON/COMMUNITY/LOVE

Ken Wilber’s all-inclusive vision/”integral philosophy”

takes in the I/WE/IT we live/move/have our being in each day

when we are alone (I space)

when we interact with others (WE space)

when we interact with corporations/banks/governments/

organized religions (IT space) – we go from

personal/to interpersonal/to impersonal

and the IT space treats us like another  IT not a PERSON

Jesus was: not a cog in the wheel of organized religion/

a layman not a priest/in the streets more than in the temple

yet priests have created elaborate religious temple ceremonies/rituals

to worship a man who never once asked to be worshiped

only followed – organized religion has made Jesus

safe/institutionalized/an IT – an object of worship

organized/institutional/impersonal religion

does not equal or create COMMUNITY

because in the past 150 years Christianity has become

largely institutionalized/like a big business

and not only laity but also clergy

are dissatisfied with institutionalized religion

“Western orthodoxy has for far too long

had a too detached/lofty/oppressive view of God

imposed on it by a “docetic” – “not really human”

view of Jesus – which has made Jesus the God-man

impotent in peoples’ personal lives” – N.T. Wright

all this has come about due to an underlying philosophy

of “individualism” spawned by Protestant theology/

reinforced by the so-called “Enlightenment”/

doubly reinforced by IT-space capitalism –

Protestantism often addressed the Word of God

to the salvation of solitary individuals

rather than the social gospel

of the transformation of society

but there is hope since evolution thrives

on communalism not individualism – survival

of the most cooperative not the most competitive

and God is the dynamic of love

that gathers all beings together

into greater consciousness/unity/LOVE.

LOVE AND SOCIAL RENEWAL

Maslow’s growth hierarchy of needs operates like this:

physiological needs must be met before we can pursue

safety/belonging/self-esteem/self-actualization/

self-transcendence needs – the need to move beyond self

into ever-expanding circles of care/consciousness –

this is the transpersonal/spiritual level

but the Enlightenment emphasis on separation

of religion and state made Christianity captive

to the financial values of the middle class

which then used religion to justify those values –

so we got stuck

at the physiological/financial safety need level

the middle class version of Christian joy

then became the synthetic “happy-making”

of going on a vacation cruise

whereas true Christian joy

takes you from the limitations

of what you had no choice to be born into

to the freedom of creatively loving

those who are strangers to you

for the soul this is all or nothing –

either we see God’s image in all people

or we don’t see at all –

love of enemies makes no logical sense

but absolute soul sense –

we can no longer exclude anyone

sometimes the “enemy” is the one you are married to

but conjugal love could become highly regarded

and bring about psychological/social/cultural renewal

if Christian couples focused not on money

but on committed/harmonious love –

divine love would shine thru everything –

“Seek joy in God/peace within yourself/love in relationships –

seek to rest in the good, the true, and the beautiful –

this resting is then God within you

loving God all around you – this is authentic social renewal.”

– Richard Rohr

THE FREEDOM OF RELIGION

God can only be in all things if we allow God to be with us

in mercy as well as power

in littleness as well as greatness

in emptiness as well as fullness –

when we are full of ego God empties us

and when we are empty God fills us with Spirit

our love of God depends on the emptiness/trials/tribulations

of the world because we cannot get to pure love

until we experience emptiness/setbacks/limitations to our ego

if you go into the world with the conscious intention

to not shut anything or anyone out of your heart

you will be constantly challenged by learning

ugly things about yourself that you always repressed –

prejudices that want to keep your heart shut down

according to psychologists there are ten lines

of internal development that can go thru stages of growth:

moral/spiritual/psychological/esthetic/physical lines

cognitive/financial/social/sexual/emotional lines

and of course psychologists overlook religious lines –

since religion is always ironically a blind spot for psychologists

even though religion pervades every culture throughout history

and religiosity is an inescapable part of our human constitution

and rights of religious freedom are founded on the dignity

of being human which can be established

thru reason and the Word of God/the Bible

freedom of religion and freedom of religious development

should therefore be written into every nation’s constitution

as a civil right of all citizens so that no one is forced

to be an atheist as in Marxism/communism

and no one is forced to be religious

as in ancient times when Christianity became

the state religion of the Holy Roman Empire

even if Christianity, unlike other “myths” –

“lies that turn out to be the Truth” – even if you don’t like it

that Christianity proposes something greater than immortality –

eternal life with God – since immortality without God and a living body

with senses – and therefore without a life – would be eternal boredom

still, despite what you like/dislike, the freedom of religion must be respected.

PEACE THRU INTEGRATION

Science is going thru a major paradigm shift

from seeing nature as mechanical and inanimate/dead

to seeing it as organic and alive

The physical sciences noted

the dissolution of energy in entropy

but ignored increasing complexity/consciousness

which is building energy up and up – it is this increase

that gives the whole cosmos its purpose and direction

Believers claim the resurrection of Christ integrates

the whole cosmos and all people into God

which is God’s purpose/direction/flow for everything:

union and transformation in God

It is good to include all religions and thus integrate everything

in a new way not the old way –

Buddhism can be part of cosmic integration

since it will not block the flow of God’s plan –

doing no harm to ourselves or others

is basic Buddhist teaching on nonaggression

which includes not killing/stealing/lying and the Christian commandments

of not doing harm in our heart/thoughts/speech/actions

However, Rosemary Radford Ruether, a great feminist theologian

pointed out that in traditional Judeo-Christianity there exists

a sacralised assumption of a divinely ordered patriarchy/hierarchy

from God to angels to men to women to animals –

this Great Chain of Being invented by men –

was the primary metaphysics for all cultures East and West

before science – and it placed women somewhere

between men and animals

No matter how we integrate everything – whether thru science

or religion or science and religion working together –

what people want most of all is to live in peace

Peace is all around us – in the world/nature/ourselves

when we live in the present moment – when mindfulness

whether Buddhist or Christian – is in us

the Holy Spirit and peace are in us –

this is not a matter of faith but of practice

and others will sense it and be transformed –

world peace begins in everyone’s heart.

A NEW AGE OF LOVE/JUSTICE/HEALING

“The fear worldview and the love worldview

do not know each other” – Marianne Williamson

Early in the 20th century a new Age of Love began

in the consciousness of Pentecostals/liberal Protestants/

progressive Catholics as they grew in awareness

that the Holy Spirit is the Motivator of Justice.

Justice is based on God seeing and loving God’s Self

in all things, and it is this seeing and loving by God

that gives all things their innate value and goodness.

The basic divine energy is to be

in relation to others – “I am because you are” –

and “I am because Creation is” – these ancient African

and Indigenous sayings show the lie of western philosophy

based on Descartes famous dictum “I think therefore I am.”

No, no – “You think because the Creation and others are.”

Because God’s energy is to be in relation to others

there is a deep need for authentic ecclesial/sacramental

experiences that model for us how to be in relation to others.

And being one with other humans would be incomplete

without being one with the universe – humans are

an integral part of the greater community

of all living beings – the true Beloved Community.

Jesus came to show us the Eros of God –

the desire of God for total intimacy – total love-making with Creation –

Jesus never counselled the use of force or fear

just love of life and all its creatures

particularly the most vulnerable: children/the sick/disabled –

Christ came so all creatures might live this life

to the full – not just the afterlife.

Thus, bringing our most vulnerable/wounded parts

to God in prayer is essential to getting them healed –

suppressing our wounds out of shame

or lack of trust in God

keeps them out of our prayer life

and out of God’s healing.
